An illustrated talk by Elaine Hansen, presented by The Arts Society HighlandThe Glasgow Girls were a group of around sixteen women who played a pivotal role in shaping the Glasgow Style between 1895 and 1920—a period of vibrant artistic innovation that paralleled the English Arts and Crafts movement and the broader international Art Nouveau trend. These gifted women worked across a variety of disciplines, including metalwork, ceramics, book illustration, gesso, embroidery, and fine art. Despite their remarkable contributions, their achievements remained largely overlooked until about 30 years ago. Among them, Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh stands out as perhaps the most renowned, and her work will be explored in greater depth.
