Jill Welham is a photographer and printmaker originally from North Yorkshire, now based in Nairn. With a background in Interior Architecture and Design, Jill has combined her design sensibility with her passion for photography and printmaking. She specializes in the cyanotype process, an historic photographic technique dating back to 1842, invented by Sir John Herschel. In 2019, Jill was awarded the overall winner of the International Photographer of the Year competition for one of her striking wet cyanotype images. Her work is deeply inspired by nature, particularly botanical forms, which she collects, presses, and uses as subjects in her prints. Jill’s experimental approach captures the intricatedetails of fern fronds, leaves, and delicate flowers, creating unique, sun-activated artworks that celebrate the beauty and memory of the natural world.
Suntrace: The Art and Alchemy of Botanical Cyanotypes
Suntrace invites viewers into a meditative encounter with the elemental forces that shape both nature and art. This exhibition showcases a compelling dialogue between light, water, and botanical forms through the cyanotype process — one of
photography’s earliest and most poetic methods. The works on display merge traditional precision with the fluid unpredictability of wet cyanotypes, capturing fleeting moments where sunlight imprints the delicate architecture of leaves, stems, and flowers. These blue-hued impressions serve as both scientific records and spiritual reflections, evoking a sense of presence, memory, and transformation. Suntrace honours the quiet alchemy that unfolds when elemental forces meet: earth and water, sun and shadow. It is an invitation to slow down, to witness the invisible touch of light, and to reflect on the deep interconnectedness between living forms and the ephemeral moments they inhabit.
