The Front Three—the Boston-based trio of Jeremiah Cossa on piano, Matt Ares on electric bass, and Henry Godfrey on drums—embodies the dynamic creative essence of their namesake: the trio of attacking players in a soccer lineup. In soccer, the front three are crucial for driving the team’s attack and scoring goals, requiring a deep, almost telepathic understanding of each other’s movements and intentions. Similarly, The Front Three aims to create vibrant, kinetic music through a profound connection and intuitive communication among its members. Their performances capture the thrilling energy and fluidity of sport, delivering a sense of freedom that comes from years of playing together and deeply understanding one another.
Each member of The Front Three brings a unique musical background to the ensemble. Jeremiah Cossa is a classically trained pianist whose expertise in contemporary performance and improvisation is channeled into jazz settings and his emerging punk band, Nurse Joy. Matt Ares, known for his groove-centric approach, releases funk-informed solo music under the moniker MKARES, fronts the band Miami Mice, and plays bass for Luiza Girardello. Henry Godfrey leads the Henry Godfrey Jazz Orchestra, co-leads the Hot Water Quintet, and is highly sought after in Boston as a versatile drummer comfortable with both contemporary styles and straight-ahead Jazz. This blend of influences and experiences results in a rich, eclectic sound, where the fusion of their distinct styles results in a captivating and unpredictable musical journey for their audience.
The Front Three’s setlist showcases their creativity and range, featuring original compositions, completely improvised free jazz odysseys, and jazz standards—sometimes straight-ahead, sometimes creatively rearranged. They explore a wide variety of genres, adapting music from sources such as anime soundtracks, hip-hop, and rock and pop songs. This eclectic approach allows the trio to continuously surprise with their ability to take familiar tunes and genres into uncharted territory.
