There are very few places in the Highlands where you'll find more Munros squeezed into such a small area as you'll find in Glenshiel. From the Cluanie Inn all the way to Morvich, the 'Road to the Isles' is hemmed in on both sides with long chains of soaring peaks and spectacular ridges.
On the north side of the road, beyond the Glenshiel battle site, stretches a chain of 5 summits, commonly known as the Five Sisters of Kintail. Of these five summits, 3 of them are Munros, Sgurr na Ciste Duibhe, Sgurr na Carnach and Sgurr Fhuaran.
Being all 'Sgurrs', they are pointy, jagged peaks and the ridges connecting them are at times steep and narrow. A few sections of easy scrambling must be negotiated but for the most part, a good path follows the undulating ridge.
This is a simply magnificent mountain walk with far reaching views in all directions that stay with us throughout. On a clear day it is even possible to see the Black Cuillin on Skye.
There is some distance between where the walk starts and ends and so we will shuffle cars around at the beginning of the day.
I prefer to walk the route from east to west thereby getting the steepest and longest ascent out the way early in the day when legs are still fresh. If we are lucky, we will be walking towards the setting sun; a truly magical site.
