Pag(m)ulat Colloquium No. 1. Join us on 6th of November at AUT City Campus.
About this Event

This colloquium will examine the perspectives and positionality of Filipino researchers, exploring how their unique cultural experiences and identities can inform research methodologies and frameworks. The two presentations will delve into the significance of Filipino concepts such as loob (inner self), kapwa (shared/fellow self), and katibayan (evidence) in shaping research approaches.

Dr. Perseville U. Mendoza will discuss the potential methodological and epistemological significance of these concepts, arguing that being a Filipino researcher involves approaching research in a manner that recognises certain values and considers how Filipino concepts can be integrated alongside mainstream frameworks.

Mr. Paolo P. Aquino, a 1.5th-generation migrant in New Zealand, will explore the ethical considerations of conducting research as a Filipino in Aotearoa, New Zealand, emphasising the importance of relational ethics and the role of the scribe in collaborating with communities to support their own goals and initiatives. He will discuss the significance of the kapwang-Tiriti identity in shaping the researcher's role and responsibilities.

Dr. Eunice Gaerlan, from Auckland University of Technology, will facilitate the colloquium, guiding the discussion and ensuring that all participants have an opportunity to contribute their insights and perspectives.

Together, these presentations will provide valuable insights into the unique contributions that Filipino researchers can make to the field of research and the importance of considering cultural perspectives and ethical considerations in research design and implementation.

This event is part of the broader Pag(m)ulat series. "Pag(m)ulat" presents a two-pronged picture of consciousness-raising and knowledge-sharing: shedding light on various perspectives, insights, and understandings regarding the Philippines and its people while, at the same time, highlighting the importance of mainstreaming this knowledge to promote a nuanced understanding and appreciation of the subject matter. The title implies a collective journey towards understanding the Philippines and the Filipino people and its dynamic relations with Aotearoa New Zealand.
