"And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet." (Rev. 16:13)
Geisliche Konzerte (Spiritual concertos) are a 17th century German genre of sacred music using settings of religious texts for vocal soloists and instrumental forces. They bring to sedate Protestant Chorales the dramatic early baroque Italian cantata style, with its contrapuntal and virtuosic instrumental writing.
Johann Rudolph Ahle (1625-1673) dedicated many compositions to this form. BlockSounds Recorder Ensemble will be joined by Maartje Sevenster, Greta Claringbould and Frank den Hartog (singers), with Ariana Odermatt (harpsichord) and Rachel Walker (gamba) on continuo to perform works by Ahle and his contemporaries Heinrich Shutz, Johann Schein, Samuel Scheidt and Johann Schmelzer.
