About this Event
Nina Simone (1933-2003) was born in North Carolina during the Jim Crow era and bore its scars. Her dream was to become a classical concert pianist, but instead became known as the “High Priestess of Soul” for her blend of jazz, blues and folk, all infused with classical music influences, including the counterpoint of Bach and the virtuosity of the Romantics.
She will be the subject of our February Extraordinary Woman session on Sunday, Feb. 22, 12:30 pm at the Revue Cinema.
We will be screening the documentary The Amazing Nina Simone, which traces the artist’s rise and fall through more than 50 interviews and archival footage.
Music historian Rob Bowman will once again be joining us as our guest speaker.
Tickets are by a suggested donation of $16.
Please note that when tickets are by donation you can only purchase one ticket at a time.
