About this Event
Alcohol
We drink to celebrate, to commiserate, to socialise, to relax, to mark every rite of passage from birth to death. Alcohol is so woven into Australian culture that questioning your relationship with it can feel almost transgressive. But something is shifting. Younger generations are drinking less. Dry July has become a national moment of reflection. New alcohol-free options are transforming the social landscape. And the science of what alcohol actually does to our bodies and minds - including recent findings that no amount is entirely safe - is challenging long-held assumptions about "everything in moderation." Whether you completed Dry July or spent the month watching on in bemusement, this session is your chance to understand what the evidence really says - and what it means for the way we live.
Meet Your Speakers
Professor Nicole Lee is a leading Addiction Psychologist, CEO at Hello Sunday Morning and Adjunct Professor at the National Drug Research Institute Curtin University. She’s a wannabe small town detective living vicariously through end to end M**der mystery series and she’s most excited to explore how alcohol became such a defining part of Australian identity and whether that story is beginning to shift.
Tegan Taylor hosts Life Matters and the cheeky health podcast What's That Rash? for ABC Radio National. When she's not warbling into a microphone, Tegan's equally happy curled up with a giant stack of books or out on the hiking trail with her dogs and a well curated podcast feed. She's most excited to talk about solutions to our alcohol problem that address big structural issues rather than blaming individuals.
The Explainer Series
The Explainer Series is a space for thoughtful conversations with people who really know their stuff, sharing insights and context so we can better navigate the big and small questions in our lives.
From international law and cryptocurrency to climate change, gut health and space junk, these talks bring ideas, trends and debates into focus, helping us form our own understanding, guided by curiosity and expertise.
There’s no spin and no hype, just experts helping us think more clearly about the world around us.
The Explainer Series is generously supported by Gina Fairfax AC and Tim Fairfax AC through the Queensland Library Foundation.
