Take a journey south of the border with Mixteco Ballet Folklorico! This talented group presents captivating dances from Mexico’s diverse regions, beginning in the northern state of Nuevo León. Influenced by European countries such as Germany, Austria, Poland, and Czechoslovakia, these lively dances include the Polka, Shotiz, and Huapangos Norteños.
From there, the group transports us to Veracruz, where intricate “Zapateados” (footwork) take center stage. Reminiscent of Flamenco dances from Spain, the dancers perform the energetic Zapateado Jarocho, showcasing friendly competition as ladies and gentlemen take turns trying to outshine one another. The region closes with the iconic La Bamba, as dancers skillfully attempt to tie a knot with a long, red ribbon—an unforgettable display of artistry and precision.
For the grand finale, the performance shifts to the state of Jalisco, where the vibrant sounds of Mariachi music come alive. Trumpets, violins, and guitars fill the air as dancers make their dramatic entrance. The women’s dresses, adorned with colorful ribbons, evoke the joy and spirit of traditional Mexican fiestas. Meanwhile, the Mexican cowboys, or Charros, join the stage with their wide-brimmed sombreros, adding flair and charm. The performance concludes with El Jarabe Tapatío, better known as the Mexican Hat Dance, leaving the audience inspired and cheering, “¡Viva México!”
