About this Event
The Dominicans of Medieval Dublin
A Symposium marking the 800th anniversary of the coming of the Dominicans to Dublin
to take place at St Saviour's Priory, Dominick Street Lower, Dublin 1
Organised by the Friends of Medieval Dublin and the Dominican Province of Ireland
Free and all Welcome
In 1224 a group of Dominican friars of the newly founded Order of Preachers arrived in Dublin and established their first foundation, St Saviour's Priory, near what is today the Four Courts. From there they established houses across the island.
The symposium will incorporate medieval chant sung by the friars of today's St Saviour's, recreating the soundscape of the original priory, and will be followed by the launch of Bernadette Williams' important new edition of The Dublin Annals of Prior John de Pembridge OP and his Dominican continuator: An account of Irish affairs, 1162-1370 (Four Courts Press, 2024).
