About this Event
Award-winning novelist and National Book Award finalist!
ANGELA FLOURNOY is the award-winning author of The Turner House and The Wilderness, both National Book award-recognized works that explore family, place, and identity with remarkable depth and warmth. Celebrated as one of the most dynamic voices in contemporary American fiction, she brings unforgettable characters and keen insight to the complexities of modern life.
The Wilderness by Angela Flournoy is a richly layered novel that follows five Black women—Desiree, Danielle, January, Monique, and Nakia—as they come of age, drift apart, and find their way back to themselves and one another. Spanning from the late 2000s into the 2020s and moving between New York and Los Angeles, the story explores identity, purpose, love, and belonging against the backdrop of economic uncertainty, cultural upheaval, and political polarization. Hailed as a “kaleidoscopic” and deeply intimate follow-up to The Turner House, The Wilderness captures the beauty and complexity of modern Black womanhood and the enduring power of friendship in a changing world.
