THE DEEP DARK WOODS (SOLO)
Originally from Saskatchewan and now based on the east coast of Canada, The Deep Dark Woods takes up a deep tradition of forlorn storytelling, drawing lines from Celtic folksongs to country blues, John Fahey to Shirley Collins. Lush and devastating, Boldt’s gothic surrealism is stark in detail and full of emotion, a murder balladeer for our time. Following the 2019 Juno Nomination for Contemporary Roots Album Of The Year, The Deep Dark Woods have been crafting their brand of prairie psychedelics and a “loose grungy folk sound” (Paste) for over ten years. Their sound is rooted in tradition, drawing inspiration from sounds out of the U.K. and Appalachia. Ryan Boldt, the band’s songwriter and singer, is known for his deep voice and rich storytelling.
With their upcoming 2024 album Broadside Ballads Vol. III, a 8-song LP, The Deep Dark Woods will lend a familiar melancholic warmth to a collection of traditional folk songs spanning centuries and continents.
APRIL MOON
Combining catchy boot-stompin tunes with a lively and fun onstage energy, Jaime April and Jason Moon make up the Liverpool-based duo APRIL MOON. Hailing from the vast prairies of Saskatchewan, Canada, the pair fell in love first with each other and then with the UK while on tour with a previous band, and when the group fell apart they decided to explore the UK’s vibrant music scene on a more permanent basis.
Described by 'New Sound Generation' as "the most sunshine-filled performance I think I’ve ever seen!", APRIL MOON's live show is a vibrant twangfest with Fleetwood Mac style harmonies, a jangly acoustic guitar, a blistering Telecaster, and a driving beat provided by an old-suitcase kick drum. The pair’s latest single,‘Part Of The Game’ was played during a Liverpool match at Anfield Stadium and follows up their full-length album ‘The Other One Was You’. Jaime and Jason are already back in the studio with plans to release a series of singles over the next 18 months with the support of a Help Musicians funding grant.
APRIL MOON call their genre Canadiana - think Americana, but with a big helping of northern charm that oozes through their style of storytelling and lyrics, creating a vivid world that covers everything from love, scandal and divorce to the hardships of growing up on the prairies, living in an abandoned brewery and cow autopsies.
