About this Event
The Debo Ray Experience Live at Groove | 21+ | 2 Item Minimum
Award-winning vocalist/performer extraordinaire Debo Ray has performed on some of the world’s biggest stages. Her versatility and vocal range are unmatched; from R&B/funk to jazz, rock, world beat and even opera. Boston Globe music critic John Garelick wrote, “What can’t Debo Ray sing?"
Debo was nominated for a Grammy in 2022 for her work with NEA Jazz Master Terri Lyne Carrington’s band Social Science. She’s performed at both Newport and Monterey Jazz and was featured in a contemporary opera with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra. About Debo, Carrington wrote, “Debo Ray is a musician’s musician. Her instrument is unparalleled and she effortlessly weaves through styles and genres to deliver exactly what the music needs.”
Debo writes music drawn from her personal experiences growing up in a strict Haitian American family, her mental health struggles, relationships good and bad, love, yearning, despair and striving/hoping for better days. Her lyrical storytelling, combined with irresistible grooves and her charismatic persona makes for an unforgettable evening.
Debo makes her solo NYC debut at Groove for a night of contemporary R&B with elements of jazz, rock, hip hop and funk. Debo and her killer band will perform music from her highly acclaimed, self-titled debut album (produced by multiple Grammy winner, R&B legend Prince Charles Alexander) as well as cuts from her soon-to-be-released follow up EP Echoes and Embers. You may also hear some covers from the likes of Chaka Khan, Lauryn Hill, Tina Turner, Nina Simone and more. From a recent concert review, music writer Mehvish Ali wrote, "The energy is electric..Her performance leaves audiences not just entertained, but held, moved and inspired."
You never know what you’re going to get at a Debo Ray show except that it will reflect musical excellence at its highest level with immersive emotional connection. With Debo, it’s not just a show; it’s an experience!!
