About this Event
The Curious Savage by John Patrick is a warmhearted and witty comedy that celebrates kindness, imagination, and the courage to be oneself. Presented by SJCCA Theatre at St. Augustine High School, the play follows Ethel P. Savage, a wealthy widow whose generosity and free spirit clash with her greedy stepchildren. In their attempt to control her fortune, they place her in a mental institution known as the Cloisters.
At the Cloisters, Mrs. Savage meets a group of residents who are labeled “unusual” by society but reveal themselves to be sincere, compassionate, and deeply human. This gentle and humorous setting becomes a place of healing and self-expression, where creativity and individuality are encouraged rather than suppressed. In contrast to the cold ambitions of the outside world, the Cloisters highlights the importance of empathy, acceptance, and emotional well-being.
Blending clever humor with heartfelt moments, The Curious Savage includes thoughtful discussions of mental health while reminding audiences that kindness and understanding matter more than wealth or status.
