Join us for our next session on Thurs. 3/5 at 7:00pm. Tell your friends! The Science Behind Coral Restoration
Hosted by Dr. John Parkinson, Assistant Professor at the University of South Florida
John is a professor and researcher at the University of South Florida, where his team uses molecular tools to investigate the biological interactions between corals and their symbiotic algae. As oceans warm, this partnership becomes stressed, often leading to
coral bleaching and death. When corals decline, we lose not only the biodiversity they support, but also the important ecological goods and services they provide, such as coastline protection. Florida is at the forefront of a global initiative to conserve and restore threatened coral reef ecosystems. John will discuss how scientists use genetic and physiological data to characterize corals and their symbionts, predict their heat tolerance, and inform restoration practice, management decisions, and policy in Florida and beyond.
