This is a free event, but bookings are essential. The exhibition Mandy Gunn: Interwoven: Collected, Cut, Created was originally exhibited at the Gippsland Art Gallery in mid 2024. Curated by Dr. Sheridan Palmer and with Mandy and Sheridan's encouragement and assistance, the exhibition is now at Coal Creek Gallery for audiences in South Gippsland, where the artist lives and works, and the curator resides part-time.
Wandering through the exhibition, the materials and techniques seen in the works of the artist are varied and astonishing, yet two themes prevail: the use of recycled materials that others have thrown away and consider nothing more than rubbish, which is re-crafted by the artist to create beautiful works of art. This makes us question our attitudes towards disposable objects and look at 'rubbish' through a new creative and environmental lens. The second theme is weaving, but rarely in the conventional sense. Even Mandy's printmaking and 3D sculpture refers to the art of weaving, which for Mandy is a constant creative drive and inspiration.
Join us for an opportunity to hear from the curator and the artist in conversation who will discuss the artworks in the show and consider practice, materiality, the ideology of recycling and repurposing and the re-imagining of the art of weaving. Hear the stories and thoughts behind the creation of works in the exhibition and how they relate to each other.
Dr Sheridan Palmer is an Art Historian and ARC Senior Research Associate and The University of Melbourne. She is also a guest curator at Gippsland Art Gallery and the curator of this exhibition.
Mandy Gunn is an artist living and working on Bunurong country. She is a prolific artist with more than thirty solo exhibitions since 1995 and over 130 group shows, also winning numerous awards.
