The Map of Salt and Stars
"The Map of Salt and Stars" by Zeyn Joukhadar is a lyrical blend of historical fiction and contemporary drama. This poignant novel interweaves the journeys of Nour, a 12-year-old Syrian refugee in 2011, and Rawiya, a 12th-century apprentice to a mapmaker. As Nour's family flees civil war across seven countries, she finds solace in her father's tale of Rawiya's adventures. Joukhadar explores themes of home, belonging, and resilience through vivid prose and rich historical detail. Set in the Middle East and North Africa, this touching coming-of-age story offers a unique perspective on the refugee experience, cultural heritage, and the timeless search for one's place in the world.
The Croissant Club
At The Croissant Club, we usually run one interactive virtual session a month, where members collectively discuss books, podcasts and movies. These discussions are usually facilitated by two co-hosts. All new and old members are welcome - come along to our next session below, if interested.
