Take a journey through the world of Japanese carpentry in this gallery tour led by Japan House London Programming Director Simon Wright. The tour explores key themes of the exhibition, including the craftsmanship of temple and shrine carpenters (dōmiya daiku) and the refined techniques of teahouse carpenters (sukiya daiku), offering guests an opportunity to deepen their understanding and appreciation of Japanese woodworking traditions and wooden architecture.
Participants will also learn more about joinery techniques (kigumi) which provide excellent examples of the precision and expert woodworking skills of Japanese carpenters.
The event lasts for about 45 minutes. Questions are encouraged.
The tours on 14 May and 11 June are held respectively as part of London Craft Week and the London Festival of Architecture.
The exhibition The Craft of Carpentry: Drawing Life from Japan’s Forests is on display in the Gallery at Japan House London from 12 March 2025 until 6 July 2025.
Please note that filming and photography may take place at this event. Photos and footage of the event may then be used to promote Japan House London, helping more people to discover what we offer. If you have any concerns, please contact us online or contact a member of the team on site.
