The Citadel, Poetry, and The Poetry Society of South Carolina.A presentation by Dan Hawkins
At first glance, poetry seems like a strange fit at a military college like The Citadel. But a look into Citadel archives reveals that there have been poets among the cadets and professors for well over a century. Beginning in the late 1800s with Prof. St. James Cummings and going through to the poetry readings and open mics conducted at the Daniel Library now, Dan will present a history of poets and poetry at the Citadel. He will highlight the relationship between The Poetry Society of South Carolina as the two have a long relationship going back to the early days of the Society.
At the end of the presentation, we will hand out poems of Citadel professors that won Poetry Society prize competitions and members of the audience will be invited to read them for the group.
Join Dan as he traces the cadence of marching and meter from the nineteenth century to the present day.
This event is free and open to the public.
