About this Event
We draw borders to keep people out, to exclude those who are different, but borders are always ambiguous and porous. What about those born on the “wrong” side of our artificial lines? The Border Patrol and ICE racially profile anybody who "looks" wrong, those who might not fit the arbitrary boxes we try to keep people in. La Migra will pick up anyone who looks like immigrant, but in a nation of immigrants, what does that even mean? Can anyone prove that they’re a true American?
Join us for our next free, public screening, followed by discussion. All are welcome.
This month’s screening is a cult classic of Chicano cinema about an American citizen wrongly deported to Tijuana for the "crime" of looking Mexican without proper documentation. It's a satirical and often silly look at American immigration policy reduces complex people to a arbitrary categories like American, Mexican, and Other Than Mexican. We will we explore the double consciousness of Mexican-Americans who blur these categories — natural born citizens of the United States who are treated as less than true Americans. Join us as we laugh at the absurdity of the border and the inhumanity of immigration policy.
