THE CERAMICIST'S GARDEN: Pride in Place
WALK 3
19 October, 2024 11am-1pm
A walk with Deb Rogers and Maurice Greenham, hosted by Anna Francis.

For the Third in our series of Walks, we are looking forward to a very special walk to celebrate the diversity of Plants, Nature and our city's green spaces, and celebrating Hanley Park as the Annual Venue for Stoke Pride. Join key Stoke-on-Trent Pride Legends Maurice Greenham and Deb Rogers. Maurice has been campaigning to support people living with HIV and the Older LGBT community and Deb Rogers is an artist and researcher whose practice explores the relationship between humans and animals, and has lead the Stoke-on-Trent Pride Arts programme for many years.

We look forward to hearing from everyone on the walk, but particularly from our LGBTQ+ community about experiences of Hanley Park and Stoke Pride.

The walk will begin in the Rose Garden, and end at AirSpace Gallery for Tea and Cake.

Dress for the weather, and please be mindful that we will be walking approximately a mile and a half. This is not a round route, so you will need to consider onward travel at the end of the walk.

The Ceramicist's Garden is an ongoing project developed by Anna Francis in conjunction with the Friends of the Spode Rose Garden. We think of ‘The Ceramicist’s Garden’ as an opportunity to explore the relationship between nature, plants and gardens, horticulture and ceramics in relation to the heritage of Stoke on Trent, and the people living here today.

For this stage of the project, The Council-Led ‘Living Heritage City’ project has commissioned the Spode Rose Garden to undertake a series of public walks which will lead to the uncovering of stories and information shared by people from the city via our community walks. The walks will have a focus on our relationship to Plants and Ceramics, with each walk taking a different theme, and being co-hosted by brilliant people from across our city.

4 themed walks will be planned which will reveal content for a permanent digital walk, to be launched as part of the City's Centenary Celebrations. The walks are an opportunity for the people and communities of the city to contribute to the permanent trail. Each walk will start at the Spode Rose Garden, and will travel up towards the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery, adding to our collection of visual material, community stories and both tangible and intangible heritage elements.

We aim to engage with a wide range of voices living, working and visiting the trail locations in order to ensure that the stories and content collected represent a diversity of voices from across the city.

Sign up to one or more of the walks, to explore this fascinating topic together or to share your own stories of gardens, horticulture, ceramics and our city.

The Friends of the Spode Rose Garden is a volunteer group who meet regularly to maintain the beautiful little oasis garden at the rear of the historic Spode site in Stoke Town, Stoke-on-Trent. We programme regular family friendly events, and commission arts projects to enhance our garden space and advocate for the value of green space in our cities.
