A bunch of college kids decide to spend the weekend in a remote cabin, and quickly, inexplicable things begin to K*ll them. Stop us if you’ve heard this one before. The Cabin in the Woods begins with a familiar, even cliché, premise. But that’s barely the tip of the iceberg — underneath the surface, the strange reality of the film will surprise you.
In fact, telling you any more would detract from the experience. The Cabin in the Woods in the sort of movie that Google auto-completes “… explanation” for when you search for it. It’s definitely not obtuse. It’s not even particularly complex. But it is a deconstruction of a well-known genre, and that can leave some viewers feeling lost and groundless. You may find, though, that the feeling when the floor of genre expectations falls away is a rush. Anything can happen. The rules are suspended. And with The Cabin in the Woods, again without spoiling anything, we can at least tell you that you’re in very good hands.
