About this Event
While rooted in Brooklyn, the series welcomes small business owners from across New York City and beyond!
Our first workshop focuses on a topic many business owners are navigating right now: compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Whether you have a physical location or operate exclusively online, with a rise in ADA-related lawsuits for small businesses, it’s more important than ever to understand what’s required.
Join us on Wednesday, March 11, from 1–2:30 pm at 651 ARTS, 10 Lafayette Ave, 4th Floor, Brooklyn. (Doors open at 12:30 pm)
Can’t attend in person? Join the virtual webinar via Start Small, Think Big → .
Led by Columbia Law School, this session offers practical guidance to help you protect your business while creating a more welcoming experience for customers. You’ll learn:
- What’s driving the increase in ADA lawsuits and how they affect local businesses
- Common accessibility issues from entryways, restrooms and signage, to e-commerce issues such as screen-reader compatibility, navigation and alt text
- Low-cost steps you can take right away to reduce risk and improve access
- How to spot potential problems before they turn into legal issues
- What to do if you receive a demand letter
The workshop will include a brief presentation by Alphapointe, a national nonprofit advancing access and economic opportunity for people who are blind or visually impaired.
Stay after the workshop for a light reception to connect and continue the conversation with other entrepreneurs who understand the challenges of running a business in this city.
