About this Event

We encounter lighting in every space we enter - it sets the atmosphere of a room through intensity, color, and form. Moving quickly through experiments, we will mock up lighting ideas from day 1 onward by exploring the different effects of shape, material, and hardware. This fun and fast-paced class will cover: basic electrical wiring, hardware, assembly, making your own blown glass parts, as well as collecting found/miscellaneous parts to light up. Demonstrations will include introductions to researching lamp parts, ordering prefabricated wiring sets, blowing your artwork according to the specs/working with glass fabricators (see below), cold working, wiring, and installation. Weekly class and assignments are given and problem solving will be a focus. Students are encouraged to think out of the box. The class is focused on from concept to finishing a piece or a collection. The class will not cover how to blow glass. At the end of the six weeks, students will have the opportunity to share their finished pieces during a class show-and-tell.

What to Expect: Again - this class will not cover introductory glassblowing, there will be NO instruction of how to create blown glass parts yourself if you do not already have the skills. However, if you are interested in lighting, come from a design/product/art background, this is an excellent class for you to experience glass fabrication and have your ideas made.

The hot shop is a loud studio, and can get quite warm. Glassblowing takes repetition and practice - expect failures along with successes. Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page.Β

Pick-up: The glass needs to cool down overnight, so the students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work.Β

This is an in-person class taking place on-site at UrbanGlass. Health and safety guidelines will be emailed to you upon registration.

We recommend registering for classes early to reserve your spot! We base materials, and teacher needs off of student enrollment. Early registration not only guarantees your spot in class, but also helps to ensure the class will run. Classes with low enrollment may be cancelled within two weeks of the start date of class. Contact our Registrar of Education, Ari Eshoo, at [email protected] if you have questions about the class or would like to arrange a payment plan.
