Paul Simon, born October 13, 1941, in Newark, New Jersey, stands as one of America's most enduring and influential singer-songwriters. Rising to fame in the 1960s as half of the folk-rock duo Simon & Garfunkel alongside Art Garfunkel, Simon's partnership produced timeless classics like "The Sound of Silence," "Mrs. Robinson," and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." However, it was his solo career that truly showcased his artistic evolution and lyrical sophistication.
Released on October 17, 1975, "Still Crazy After All These Years" marked Simon's fourth solo studio album and became a defining moment in his career. This Grammy Award-winning masterpiece demonstrated Simon's maturation as both a songwriter and performer, exploring themes of aging, relationships, and personal reflection with remarkable depth and vulnerability.
The album achieved remarkable commercial success, producing four U.S. Top 40 hits: "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" (No. 1), "Gone at Last" (No. 23), "My Little Town" (No. 9), and the title track (No. 40). The collection represented a perfect balance of Simon's folk roots and his growing interest in jazz and sophisticated pop arrangements.
The album won two Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 1976, cementing Simon's reputation as a solo artist capable of matching his earlier success with Garfunkel. Notably, "My Little Town" reunited Simon with his former partner, showing that their artistic chemistry remained intact despite their professional separation.
As we approach the 50th anniversary of this landmark album in 2025, "Still Crazy After All These Years" continues to resonate with new generations of listeners. Its exploration of middle-aged introspection and the complexities of modern relationships feels as relevant today as it did nearly five decades ago, proving that great songwriting transcends time and generational boundaries.
This show will capture both his work with Art Garfunkel and his solo years in two sets that explore his depth and mastery as a songwriter of the highest order.
Featuring Steve Wrigley, Glen Richardson and Charlotte Glasson.
This show will be seated.
