Vive la France! Step into the musical world of Renaissance France with Brighton Consort as we explore music composed for, or inspired by, French royalty. Under the direction of Early Music specialist Greg Skidmore, join us on Saturday 7th February 2026 at 7:00pm as we return to Trinity Church, St John sub Castro, Lewes for an evening presenting a mix of sacred and secular a cappella works by some of France’s most notable composers.
The programme ranges from sacred motets by Jean L’Heritier, Jean Mouton, Jean Richafort, Josquin des Prez, and Claudin de Sermisy, reflecting the devotional side of French music, to secular chansons that move from gentle and reflective to lively and dramatic. The evening concludes with the energetic war chansons Le Prise de Calais by Guillaume Costeley and La Guerre by Clément Janequin, featuring choruses that imitate cannon fire and marching horses — a rare chance to hear history brought vividly to life.
By balancing sacred and secular, slow and fast, introspective and energetic works, the programme offers a journey through the richness and variety of French Renaissance music, promising an engaging and memorable evening for both long-time early music fans and newcomers alike.
