Widely considered to be one of the greatest war films ever made, David Lean’s (Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago) The Bridge on the River Kwai follows a group of POWs in Japanese-occupied Burma who are forced to construct a railway bridge for their captors. The prisoners initially seek to stall and sabotage the construction, but after being tortured, Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness), the British commander, becomes obsessed with finishing the bridge as a symbol of British pride, unaware that an Allied commando team is plotting a daring raid through the jungle to destroy it. Winner of seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Guinness), and Best Director. (1957, 161 mins)
