The Oxford vs Cambridge Boat Race is one of Britain's oldest and most spectacular sporting spectacles — and in 2026 it's happening on Easter Saturday, 4 April, along a 6.8km stretch of the Thames from Putney to Chiswick. The Women's Race starts at 2:21pm, with the Men's Race following at 3:21pm. Entry along the riverbank is completely free.
This year's race carries the title of The CHANEL J12 Boat Race, in Chanel's second year as title sponsor. The 2026 edition marks the 80th Women's Boat Race and the 171st Men's Boat Race — a rivalry stretching back to 1829 that draws over 250,000 spectators to the Thames and five million TV viewers worldwide.
The Championship Course runs from downstream of Putney Bridge, passes under Hammersmith Bridge and Barnes Bridge, and finishes just before Chiswick Bridge. The full route winds through some of London's most beautiful riverside scenery, and with spring sunshine, the banks are lined with picnics, flags, and passionate supporters from both sides of the river.
There are two official fan zones — the Hammersmith fan zone in Furnivall Gardens (open 11am–5pm, with big screens showing the full race) and the Fulham fan zone near the start, primarily for Oxford supporters. Both are free to enter. Both races are broadcast live on Channel 4 from 1:30pm — the first time in nearly a century that the BBC won't be broadcasting the event.
Cambridge come into 2026 as defending champions of both the Blue Boat and the Reserve Race. On the women's side, Cambridge lead the all-time series 48–30; on the men's, Cambridge lead 88–81 with one dead heat in 1877.
Getting there: Putney Bridge (District line) for the start, Hammersmith (District/Piccadilly/Circle/H&C lines) for mid-race, Barnes Bridge (South Western Railway) for the finish. Expect significant crowds — arrive early for a good spot.
