This summer, Advocates for Urban Agriculture (AUA) is proud to offer The Bloom Series on Food Safety, Production, and Soil Health that deepens sustainable growing practices.

Check out the agenda for the day and join us at any point!

11am-11:30am: Community, food, and drinks

11:30am-12:00am: Farm tour with Roz Owens of Bronzeville Neighborhood Farm

12:00am-12:45pm: Production and Harvest tracking methods conversation with Kevin Erickson of Loyola University

12:45pm-1:45pm: Food safety and sanitation with Tucker Kelly of AUA, Soil health station with Val Espinoza of AUA

About Kevin Erickson

Kevin Erickson is an Instructor and Program Manager at Loyola University Chicago’s School of Environmental Sustainability. With over 20 years of food production experience and program leadership, Erickson has an extensive background in production methods including rural and urban farming, hydroponics, aquaponics, cannabis production, and mushroom cultivation. Prior to Loyola University Chicago, he was a Program Manager for Windy City Harvest, worked on several farms in Georgia and California, and earned a Masters degree studying the impact of heavy metals on cannabis production. Erickson brings a diverse knowledge of farming systems, methods, and innovations focusing on improving small-scale crop production and food system equity.


About Bronzeville Neighborhood Farm

Bronzeville Neighborhood Farm was created in 2017 by Johnnie Owens to serve the Bronzeville community to fight food insecurity. Johnnie also wanted to engage the residents in eating healthy, organically grown vegetables to combat the many ailments that are prevalent in the African American community.

Acerca de Kevin Erickson

Kevin Erickson es Instructor y Gerente de Programa en la Escuela de Sostenibilidad Ambiental de la Universidad Loyola de Chicago. Con más de 20 años de experiencia en producción de alimentos y liderazgo de programas, Erickson tiene una amplia trayectoria en métodos de producción que incluyen agricultura rural y urbana, hidroponía, acuasostenibilidad, producción de cannabis y cultivo de hongos. Antes de Loyola University Chicago, fue Gerente de Programa para Windy City Harvest, trabajó en varias granjas en Georgia y California, y obtuvo una maestría estudiando el impacto de los metales pesados en la producción de cannabis. How to Prepare
  1. Wear comfortable weather appropriate clothes
  2. Long sleeves are recommended

  • The farm does not have pathed paths and has some rocky terrain
  • There is a port-a-potty on the farm with a sink for hand washing
  • Because the event is outside, masks will be optional
