Q&A followed by a Q&A with director Graeme Mathieson and musician Jay Douglas!
Back in November, The Black Nerds had the honor of celebrating Toronto’s underground hip-hop roots at The Revue Cinema with the 30th anniversary screening of Make Some Noise, directed by Andrew Munger. This January, we return with another pivotal chapter in the city’s rich musical history—Play It Loud! – How Toronto Got Soul, a captivating documentary that explores the evolution of Jamaican music in Canada and the indelible mark it left on Toronto’s cultural fabric.
At the heart of Play It Loud! is Jay Douglas, a legendary Jamaican-Canadian singer whose journey from rural Jamaica to Toronto’s vibrant music scene mirrors the rise of reggae, ska, and soul across the city. From his days leading The Cougars to performing at the hottest clubs on Yonge Street, Douglas helped shape a sound that transcended borders and became a cornerstone of Toronto’s musical identity.
Directed by Graeme Mathieson and produced by Andrew Munger (Make Some Noise, Once Were Brothers), with executive producer Clement Virgo (Brother, The Wire), this documentary offers a deep dive into the Jamaican music movement that made Toronto a cultural hub in North America.
After the screening, stay for a very special Q&A. Delve into the untold stories, the creative energy, and the unique struggles of a generation that defined Toronto’s musical soul.
Play It Loud! – How Toronto Got Soul is more than just a film—it’s a celebration of a musical revolution that shaped Toronto and beyond. Whether you’re a music lover, a history enthusiast, or someone interested in the roots of Canadian culture, this event promises an unforgettable evening.
Join us at Revue Cinema on January 24th at 6:45 PM for an evening celebrating the rich spirit of Toronto’s cultural legacy. -Faduma Gure
