Learn why some depressions are harder to treat, and what families can do to help when your loved one is struggling.
About this Event

Do you feel "stuck" in the cycle of caregiving?

When a loved one is struggling with depression, it can feel confusing, frustrating, and at times even hopeless—especially when nothing seems to work.

Join MHRP Central Island and psychiatrist Dr. Chi Hung Au for an afternoon focused on understanding why some people get “stuck” in depression, and what families can do to help.

This session will translate the clinical science of mental health into clear, practical insights for caregivers—helping shift the perspective from frustration to compassion.

Part 1: Understanding the “Stuck” Brain

Dr. Au will explore:

  • Why some forms of depression are biologically more difficult to shift
  • How brain-based patterns—not willpower—drive many behaviors
  • Why standard treatments don’t always work the same for everyone
  • Practical, physiology-based strategies caregivers can use to help de-escalate distress and support emotional regulation at home

Part 2: Lived Experience Panel

Following the keynote, hear directly from a panel of individuals living with mental illness and fellow caregivers. They will share their personal journeys, bridging the gap between clinical science and the day-to-day realities of caregiving, resilience, and hope.

Come connect with your community and leave with both practical tools and a renewed sense of compassion.
