THE BARTENDERS, one of the few ska-jazz bands in Poland, met inWarsaw in 2006. They have been fascinated by Jamaican music from the 1960s and 1970s. Their main challenge is flavouring Jamaican rhythm with the Polish musical tradition and approach to composing melodies. In 2013 The Bartenders released their debut album, SZUMNA SESSIONS. The main idea of this album was a collaboration with guest vocalists, i.e. Dr Ring-Ding, Daniel Broman, Duże Pe, Mamadou Diouf and Earl Jacob. The album was very well received by listeners and critics.
The second album (POLES ARE MOVIN'!, released in 2016) was presented not only at the Polish reggae festivals in Bielawa and Ostróda, but also at the biggest Jamaican style music festivals like This is SKA in Germany and Rototom Sunsplash in Spain. In Poland the band has shared the stage with the world’s greatest ska bands: The Skatalites, Dr. Ring-Ding, New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble, Rotterdam Ska-Jazz Foundation, Yellow Umbrella, The Slackers, and many more.
As in 2015 was the 50th anniversary of first Polish ska EP
release, The Bartenders were a part of the anniversary event
as arrangers, guest singers and backup band for Alibabki (the Polish female choir from the 1960s who performed that historical ska EP). After the event, The Bartenders released the album TRIBUTE TO ALIBABKI with all the music from the anniversary concert in a studio version, as a split with versions of the songs from the original 1965 EP.
The last album released in 2024, titled SKANKIN' TO THE JAZZ, brings much more jazz-flavoured harmonies and solos, keeping still very enjoyable ska music vibe. In some new songs, recorded for forthcoming EP, The Bartenders stepped into new latino territory: a lot of hot salsa-based rhythms, enriched with jazzy solos.
The Bartenders are:
Agnieszka Gruczek (p, kb), Witold Haliniak (tb, voc), Kuba Kaczmarek (voc), Marcin Kobus (tp), Tomasz Kuc (bg, voc), Piotr Jaros (ts, bs), Jacek Orłow (dr), Jakub Pajewski (g), Dawid Somló (perc, voc), Jacek Szczepanek (sound)
