Love is a burning thing, and no one burned brighter than Johnny Cash and June Carter.
He was a small-town musician and storyteller with a voice that stirred the soul. She was the comedienne of the first family of country music.
The Ballad of Johnny & June takes you inside the soaring highs and shattering lows of a love story that defined an era. From the stage to the road, through triumphs, heartbreak, and redemption this brand-new musical, created with the support of their family and told through the eyes of their son, John Carter Cash, shows why Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash remain one of the most infamous couples of the 20th Century.
American musical theatre star Christopher Ryan Grant, who originated the role of Johnny Cash in the New York and Canada premiere, now brings his acclaimed portrayal to the UK stage for the first time, joined by award-nominated actress Christina Bianco (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, The Wizard of Oz).
Packed with legendary hits from I Walk the Line, Ring of Fire, Hey Porter, Jackson, I’ve Been Everywhere and directed by two-time Tony Award winner Des McAnuff (Jersey Boys, The Who’s Tommy, and Summer: The Donna Summer Musical) don’t miss your chance to join music royalty for The Ballad of Johnny & June .

Opened in 1964 and overlooking the Thames Estuary, the theatre welcomes more than 1,630 guests across over 300 performances each year, presenting everything from chart-topping music and stand-up comedy to classical concerts, ballet, opera, and hit West End musicals. The venue is also home to the largest pantomime in the South East, making it a firm favourite for audiences across Essex and beyond.
The Cliffs Pavilion is currently undergoing a major refurbishment, with work continuing until autumn 2026. These improvements include an expanded restaurant, a new entrance and lobby, upgraded ventilation, a new outdoor piazza, and enhancements to bars, toilets (including a Changing Places facility), lifts, and overall access. All upgrades are designed to enhance the visitor experience while performances continue as normal, ensuring audiences can enjoy shows without disruption as the venue is thoughtfully modernised for the future.
### History of Cliffs Pavilion
Plans for the original theatre began in the 1930s, when it was intended to be a smaller, 500-seat Art Deco-style venue. Construction was halted by the outbreak of the Second World War, and the site remained undeveloped until the late 1950s.
The current building was relocated slightly closer to the cliff edge and officially opened in 1964, around 45 miles from Central London. Over time, it established itself as one of the region’s most important large-scale theatres.
In 1991–1992, the venue closed for a major redevelopment funded by Southend Borough Council and designed by Tim Foster Architects. The project added a balcony to the auditorium and a new Foyer Bar, significantly expanding capacity and amenities.
