The worst, most cliché habit of a self-proclaimed music enthusiast is to sneer and dismiss popular music as a whole. The Assortment is a pure rejection of that attitude. Michael Todd Grey, a lover of music, holds to the philosophy that LCD Soundsystem, Ariana Grande, and Outkast can and should be heard together. Pop music is not a dirty word, and music whose appeal is based in unhindered fun can be just as affirming as the underground and independent music that is more “intellectual.” The Assortment is a monthly dance night, the third Saturday of every month, that brings together an eclectic mix in hip-hop, pop, R&B, and others – an assortment. It is a safe, non-judgmental environment catering to diverse people with deeply diverse tastes in music.
