This special workshop offers a rare opportunity to experience the craftsmanship of Koyo Tile artisans from Himeji, masters of traditional Japanese roof tile artistry (kawara). Participants will learn about the history and cultural significance of Japanese tile-making, particularly the iconic Shachi (Shachihoko) — a mythical tiger-headed fish believed to protect castles and buildings from fire. Often seen on the rooftops of Japanese castles, the Shachi symbolizes strength, protection, and prosperity.
During this immersive program, artisans will introduce traditional tile-making techniques and tools. After observing a live demonstration, participants will enjoy a hands-on experience shaping and detailing their own Shachi statue using authentic clay methods.
This workshop provides a meaningful encounter with Japanese architectural heritage and craftsmanship.
