The Art of Japanese Brush Calligraphy

Bring the whole family to discover the beauty of Japanese calligraphy in this hands-on workshop led by Glasgow-based artist and designer, Kanae Park. Originally from Japan and practicing calligraphy since childhood, Kanae loves sharing this traditional art in a way that’s fun, creative, and welcoming for everyone.

Together, you’ll learn how to use real Japanese brushes and ink, try out simple strokes, and even write your own name—or a loved one’s (pets included!)—in beautiful Japanese characters. Along the way, you’ll enjoy the calming, mindful side of calligraphy while exploring a new culture in a relaxed and supportive setting.

Perfect for children, parents, grandparents, and anyone curious to try something new, this workshop offers a joyful way to create meaningful keepsakes and spend quality time together. No experience needed—just bring your curiosity and imagination!

This is a hands-on workshop using black ink, which may stain clothing. We recommend wearing old clothes or bringing an apron to keep everyone comfortable and worry-free while creating.

This workshop is suitable for children aged 6 and up. Children are very welcome to attend with the support of a parent or guardian.

Kanae is a Japanese artist and designer based in Glasgow who specializes in eye-catching 2D and 3D design. She enjoys inventing and drawing cute, original characters inspired by her heritage and culture. Notable client-based commissions include designing an album cover for Scottish band, Constant Follower and creating illustrations for popular Japanese magazine, Bungeishunju. Kanae is eager to explore the creative world, continuing to collaborate with other designers to create unique projects.
