Join us to commemorate the 90th Anniversary of W.E.B. Du Bois's Black Reconstruction in America: An essay toward a history of the part which Black folk played in the attempt to reconstruct democracy in America, 1860–1880.
This event will consist of a lecture and community discussion with renowned Du Bois Scholar and fighter for peace, Dr. Anthony Monteiro. This lecture will discuss the life and work of Du Bois as the founder of a new movement of world thought, and the significance of this book as a work of history, political analysis, and moral education for American democracy.
Dr. Anthony Monteiro is a longtime activist and scholar from Philadelphia, PA.
His work centers on W.E.B. DuBois Studies, movements for Freedom, and philosophy. He lives in Philadelphia where he is active in social, economic and political struggles. He has published hundreds of essays and articles in peer reviewed journals, popular magazines, newspapers, and is widely cited by scholars in multiple disciplines. As well as a PhD in Sociology from Temple University, he has an honorary doctorate from Lincoln University.
This event is organized by the The Saturday Free School for Philosophy and Black Liberation. We meet every Saturday at the Church of the Crucifixion in Philadelphia to discuss social movements, politics, and the path ahead for humanity. We are grounded in the thinking and practice of figures such as James Baldwin, W.E.B. Du Bois and Martin Luther King Jr. We organize events, symposiums and celebrations for the political education of the people . We livestream our discussions every Saturday on Facebook and Youtube. In the past, in Chicago, we organized a celebration of Paul Robeson at the Du Sable Museum, Reverend James Lawson at Kalapriya Foundation, and James Baldwin at the Harold Washington Branch of the Chicago Public Library and Healthy Hood (see links for articles about these events).
