Your Topic:

The anatomy of brainwashing: How we plumb our brains
The brain is our most active organ, yet it lacks the "normal" plumbing of the rest of the body to take out the trash. Instead, it relies on a hidden waste-clearance system to sweep away toxic debris while we sleep. But what happens when the pipes get clogged? From the mechanics of sleep to the roots of Alzheimer’s, we’ll take a deep dive into the fascinating world of brain cleansing and how it protects your health over a lifetime.

Your Speaker:

Leon began his scientific journey in New Zealand, where he completed both his PhD and a postdoctoral fellowship before heading to St Louis to join Washington University. After several years abroad, he has returned to this side of the world and established his own laboratory at Monash University.

Here, Leon is delving deeper into the fascinating intersection of the nervous and immune systems. His research explores how these two systems communicate at their border tissues (the meninges) and how immune cells within the skull’s bone marrow detect and respond to changes inside the brain. His work is helping to reshape our understanding of how the brain and immune system stay connected and coordinated.
