The AI Mirror: How to Reclaim Our Humanity in an Age of Machine Thinking with Professor Shannon Vallor

AI ethicist, author, and professor Shannon Vallor will deliver the Anita and Antonio Gotto Lecture on Sunday, September 28, at 2 pm.

Professor Shannon Vallor serves as Director of the Centre for Technomoral Futures in the Edinburgh Futures Institute. She holds the Baillie Gifford Chair in the Ethics of Data and Artificial Intelligence in the University of Edinburgh’s Department of Philosophy. Professor Vallor joined the Futures Institute in 2020 following a career in the United States as a leader in the ethics of emerging technologies, including a post as a visiting AI Ethicist at Google from 2018–2020.

She is the author of Technology and the Virtues: A Philosophical Guide to a Future Worth Wanting. Vallor serves as advisor to government and industry bodies on responsible AI and data ethics. She is also Principal Investigator and Co-Director (with Professor Ewa Luger) of the UKRI research programme BRAID (Bridging Responsible AI Divides), funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

Her research explores how emerging technologies shape—and are shaped by—human values, moral agency, and civic life.

Vallor’s work has guided global conversations on the responsible design and governance of AI systems, and she is a sought-after advisor to academic, policy, and industry leaders around the world.

Vallor’s latest book, The AI Mirror: How to Reclaim Our Humanity in an Age of Machine Thinking, explores the ethics, advantages, and challenges of a future with artificial intelligence.

Don’t miss this chance to hear from one of the most vital and visionary thinkers at the intersection of technology, ethics, and the human future.
