About this Event
Welcome to North York Reading Group! The group is established with the purpose to facilitate discussion on readings about society, history, environment, humanity and philosophy.
We are now living in the age of surveillance. There are more and more CCTV hidden in different corners of the city, but they are not the largest threat of privacy. The best tool to track our location is the one we cannot live without - the smartphone. And it is way beyond what CCTV can monitor, which is what you do at a specific location. Through the combination of smartphone and social media, corporate can learn how old we are, where we live, where we work, our favourate cuisine, the genre of movie we love, and more and more. These information are not employed to reconstruct what kind of person we are. Instead, our personality are reduced to data and statistics, to facilitate manipulation for further profit.
This is a single session with first half hour giving a brief introduction to the book, and then discuss any comment / question / insight related to the ideas raised in the book. This will be a relaxed one and a half hour session without any prerequisite to join.
