About this Event
Long time Philly activist and chef Valerie Erwin will present on the history of African dishes in America. This story is more nuanced, and more important than the simple “soul food” narrative that is often bandied about.
It’s the story of keeping some dishes virtually unchanged from the continent to the cruel new world; of adapting some dishes to accommodate new ingredients and circumstances; of inventing some dishes wholesale in the Americas. Valerie’s presentation will weave these threads together.
