Presenter: Sueann Kenney-Noziska, MSW, LCSW, RPT-S, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Registered Play Therapist Supervisor who specializes in using play therapy in clinical practice with abused and traumatized children, adolescents and their families. As part of her clinical work, she provides outpatient psychotherapy to those impacted by childhood sexual abuse, emotional and physical maltreatment and other traumatic events. Sueann is internationally recognized in the field and is an author, guest lecturer and clinician who has trained thousands of professionals.

Day One Overview: This workshop will emphasize using play therapy with victims of sexual abuse and trauma. Frameworks for conceptualizing the impact of sexual abuse, treatment components from evidence-based practice models, and play therapy will be integrated to create abuse-informed interventions that are developmentally appropriate and clinically sound. Attendees will receive a variety of directive play therapy interventions which address core components of sexual abuse treatment including psychoeducation, emotional expression, cognitive coping, and trauma narration. Lecture, experiential activities, group discussion, and case examples will provide participants with a comprehensive learning experience.


Learning Objectives: After participating in the workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Define integrative play therapy

2. Describe at least three findings from the adverse childhood experiences study

3. Describe at least two ways that trauma impacts the brain

4. Discuss 1-2 ways play therapy and other expressive interventions are consistent with findings in the neurosciences

5. Describe at least two ways that posttraumatic play can be used in clinical practice with abused and traumatized children and adolescents in the play therapy setting

6. Identify a minimum of five play-therapy based interventions to use as part of treatment for abuse and trauma.

2. Identify the difference between dynamic and toxic posttraumatic play in the play therapy setting

3. Identify at least three dynamics of sexual abuse which may be utilized to underscore play therapy assessment and intervention of sexually abused individuals

4. Describe areas of clinical need for children and adolescents who have been victims of childhood sexual abuse and discuss ways in which play therapy can be utilized to meet these needs

5. Identify 2-3 cultural considerations when working with sexually abused children in the play therapy setting

6. Discuss 1-2 areas of special consideration when working with sexually traumatized children and adolescents in play therapy

CONTINUING EDUCATION: To receive Continuing Education credit, participants must complete all CE materials, sign in/out requests and submit an evaluation form for each program attended. Full attendance is required. It is the responsibility of the participants to determine if CE Credits offered by SCAPT meet the regulations of their state licensing/certification board. CE Certificates will be disseminated after all CE materials are reviewed.

Continuing Education: This event is sponsored by the SC Association for Play Therapy(APT Approved Provider #99-061) and provides continuing education specific to play therapy. This conference event carries 12 Continuing Education Hours (CONTACT ) specific to Play Therapy. SCAPT maintains the responsibility for this program and content.

Any agency agreements for payment are between the attendee and the agency, and not with SCAPT.
