SYMPHONIA CHORALIS 10TH ANNIVERSARY GALA CONCERT
That Which Prevails
Symphonia Choralis marks its 10th anniversary with a landmark concert that brings the ensemble together with a specially assembled orchestra of local self-employed musicians. Formed a decade ago, the choir has grown into a large and committed community of singers known for expressive performances and ambitious repertoire. This inaugural self-titled concert launches a renewed ten-year artistic plan and gives our choristers the rare chance to work in a full orchestral setting, deepening ensemble discipline and widening their musical experience.

The programme features Carmina Burana by Carl Orff, a powerful and rhythm-driven choral work that is known worldwide for its opening movement, O Fortuna. This piece will unite adult singers, a children’s choir, and orchestra in a large-scale production. The children’s choir will give young singers the chance to experience a professional-level performance and take part in a major choral event.

Another key work is The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughan Williams, one of the most beloved pieces in the English classical repertoire. It will be performed by violinist Natalie Koh, whose sensitive and lyrical playing has made her a strong interpreter of this work.

The concert will also present a major work by Singaporean Dr Chen Zhangyi, one of the country’s leading contemporary composers. Ariadne’s Love gained international attention when the Eric Whitacre Singers, a major figure in the global choral world, recorded it. The evening will feature Ariadne’s Love as a Singapore premiere.

The programme includes a showcase by Choralimus, our award-winning chamber choir known for clarity and precision. Their appearance reflects how Symphonia Choralis has grown an ecosystem of choral excellence over the decade.

About Symphonia Choralis
Symphonia Choralis began quietly as a project choir and has grown into a committed community of singers drawn from across the choral landscape. From the start, it brought together people willing to step beyond what felt familiar and to make music alongside others they did not yet know. They stayed not out of obligation or loyalty, but because they believed in the work and in what music could mean to those making it. This belief made it possible to take on demanding repertoire, from Final Fantasy: Distant Worlds to Elgar’s The Music Makers, through a shared willingness to listen, to trust one another, and to grow together as musicians.

In the years that followed, Symphonia Choralis grew through a wide range of collaborations and repertoire. We worked with the Orchestra of Music Makers on Bernstein’s Mass and Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast. With Philharmonic Winds, our singers took part in Johan de Meij’s Planet Earth. With Musicians’ Initiative, we performed both Lim Fantasy and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. More recently, we entered the operatic world through Rusalka and Rigoletto with New Opera Singapore, and in 2025, we joined a massed chorus for Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Across these projects, whenever a new challenge presented itself, the singers returned, ready to commit again

At the heart of Symphonia Choralis has always been the belief that singing is a collective act of learning. Our singers come with a willingness to listen, to take responsibility for the whole, and to grow as musicians together. This shared ethos has allowed the choir to take on increasingly demanding repertoire and collaborations over the years.
