Thalea String Quartet: Something Golden

Thalea String Quartet brings a curious, high-energy approach to the string quartet, pairing Joseph Haydn’s beloved “String Quartet in C major,” Op. 33, No. 3 “The Bird” with a wide-ranging set of works that draw from many musical worlds. The program includes Terry Riley’s “Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collector,” a hypnotic, raga-influenced jam built from flexible musical “modules” that the performers shape into a fresh version each time. A new commission by composer India Gailey, “Cloud No. 2,” drifts through the shape and motion of low-level cumulus clouds, with white to light grey forms, flat bases, and cauliflower-like towers passing across the musical landscape before dissolving. Gabriella Smith’s “Carrot Revolution” snaps with bright shifts of colour and texture, pulling inspiration from Paul Cézanne and musical influences that stretch from medieval sound to folk and classic rock. Akshaya Avril Tucker’s “Radha in the Forest” imagines the Sanskrit heroine Radha set down in a lonely Massachusetts winter, and features second violinist Kumiko Sakamoto as both violinist and vocalist in a spell-binding work shaped by Odissi classical Indian dance traditions. Multiple GRAMMY Award-winning composer and cellist Andrew Yee brings a deeply personal reflection in “Something Golden,” a work about discovering and sharing the “gold” each person carries within them. Known for expressive performances, the Quartet has captivated audiences across North America, Europe, and China, with appearances at venues including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Toronto’s Massey Hall. Please note that the Rolston String Quartet's Peter Eom replaces Alex Cox as cellist for this performance. A co-presentation with Debut Atlantic. Season Sponsor: Nice Moves / Red Door Realty.
