About this Event
“I set down a beautiful chord on paper and suddenly it rusts” - Alfred Schnittke
Motion is something inherent to music; it is essential to our survival as animals, and from the polyphony of Thomas Tallis up to Schnittke, Steve Reich, and Donnacha Dennehy, movement, repetition, and refraction have been an artistic obsessions of ours for hundreds of years.
In a hypnotic 40-minute meditation on the sound of viola and viols, Dominic Stokes combines a newly commissioned version of ‘Tessellatum’ for solo viola and audio playback, by the prolific Irish composer Donnacha Dennehy, with a commissioned visual response by filmmaker Maria Andrews, creating an otherworldly, immersive atmosphere; elliding musical and visual lines, one shape from a 1000 different angles.
