Opening Day of the Latin American Softball League will begin with a ceremony including someone throwing out the first pitch, the singing of our National Anthem and our traditional calling out of those friends of the League who have passed away or as we call it: "In Memoriam".We invite everyone to become a part of a tradition that goes back to 1948 when the first Latin baseball league started when three men decided that the farm workers needed a way to relax on their one day off. Discrimination played a role. They started the league and it became a one-day event at the park where the ballplayers felt safe between the lines of the field to speak their language. After the games, a community wide picnic for the families and really, anyone willing to cross the lines and become a part of this community.
This is open to everyone and of course, although those "lines" are still there, they are only there if we choose them to be there.
