This is an adaptation of the ancient Tenebrae services held during Holy Week. Tenebrae, a Latin word meaning “shadows” or “dark hours,” refers to the gradual extinguishing of the candles. The service of Tenebrae consists of seven scenes surrounding the crucifixion of Christ. Each scene contains appropriate scripture and song.
The room is gradually darkened as a candle is extinguished during each scene. At the end, only one candle remains burning, and it is removed for a time. The light is then returned, and, one by one, the candles over the whole room are lighted. This symbolizes Christ’s resurrection and glory, spread throughout the world.
Our service will begin with the celebration of The Lord’s Supper and will take place in the Activity Center. You may enter through any door to the Activity Center or Education Building. Easiest access is to park on Elizabeth and Irwin Streets.
