Mi lenne, ha az összes nő egyszerre kivenne egy szabadnapot mindenből? Anyák, feleségek, gyári munkások, gépíró kisasszonyok, tanárnők. A 70-es évek Vörösharisnyái Izlandon arra jutottak: ez végre talán megmutatná, mennyit ér a nők munkája. Trolloknak csúfolták őket, pedig átlagos nők voltak. Nők, akik eleget hallgatták, mit csinálhatnak és mit nem, csak azért, mert lánynak születtek. Nők, akik nem akartak láthatatlanok maradni: a tökéletes smink mögött, a hajcsavarók alatt, a konyhában és a munkahelyen felváltva robotolni egy életen át, mint az anyukáik. El akarták érni, hogy a nőknek is legyen választásuk. De vajon mi történne, ha egy napon a férfiak kénytelenek lennének rájönni, hogy nők nélkül nem csupán az a kérdés, kerül-e ebéd az asztalra és tiszta pelenka a babapopsira, hanem az is, hogy kinyitnak-e a boltok. Felszállnak-e a repülőgépek. Megjelenik-e a másnapi újság. Vajon lehetséges olyan széleskörű összefogást kovácsolni, ami megbénít egy egész országot és felébreszti a világot?

What if all women took a day off from everything at the same time? Mothers, wives, factory workers, typists, teachers. In the 1970s, the Redstockings of Iceland came to the conclusion that this might finally show the true value of women’s work. They were mocked as trolls, yet they were ordinary women. Women who had long listened to what they could and could not do simply because they were born girls. Women who no longer wanted to remain invisible—hidden behind perfect makeup, under hair rollers, working tirelessly in the kitchen and at their jobs for a lifetime, just like their mothers. They wanted women to have a choice.
But what would happen if, for one day, men were forced to realize that without women it’s not just a question of whether lunch makes it to the table or a clean diaper onto the baby—but whether the shops open at all. Whether planes take off. Whether the next day’s newspaper is published. Is it possible to forge such broad solidarity that it paralyzes an entire country—and awakens the world?
