DESCRIPTION:

This workshop will explore the fundamentals of Telepsychology, including operational definitions, clinical examples, implementation strategies, and risk management. Participants will learn how to select appropriate technologies for delivering care, determine when to offer in-person versus remote services, and implement effective strategies to mitigate risks. The workshop will also cover key laws and regulations impacting telehealth, as well as the potential integration of digital therapeutics and AI into clinical practice. The speaker will provide ethical guidance for participants navigating the evolving role of Telepsychology in their field. Featuring video demonstrations, the session will combine lecture, group discussions, and live Q&A to create a dynamic and engaging learning experience.


Learning Objectives:

After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe 3 key aspects of basic hypnosis theory and technique;
  • Explain differences between demonstrations of hypnotic technique and phenomena;
  • Identify 2 differences between acute and chronic pain; and
  • Demonstrate effective use of hypnosis in controlling acute pain.

CE Credits: 3.5 CE Hours

CALIFORNIA LMFTs, LCSW, LEPs, & LPCCs: State of California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) no longer approves continuing education providers. All providers have been removed from the provider list. As a replacement the board now accepts courses completed from a provider that has been approved by a number of different agencies. The Wright Institute is approved by the APA. All courses on this site are accepted for continuing education credit by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.


Bio:

Dr. Smucker Barnwell, PhD is a licensed clinical psychologist who provides consultation in behavioral telehealth nationally. Her research and publication interests focus on the ethical intersection of technology and evidence-based therapies.

Dr. Smucker Barnwell has spent her career focused on practice innovation. She has published extensively in behavioral telehealth, has contributed significantly to national telehealth policy, and is a nationally recognized speaker. Dr. Smucker Barnwell served on the Joint APA/ASPPB/APAIT Telepsychology Taskforce, coauthoring the APA Guidelines to Telepsychology, and is the current Chair of the workgroup to revise the guidelines. She has consulted on the American Telemedicine Association guidelines for adolescent telehealth, and has contributed to various other national committees regarding telehealth and ethical technology use in health care. She is the host of the American Insurance Trust Telehealth Community Chat, a regular forum dedicated to discussion of behavioral telehealth risk management. She works as a consultant to a diversity of behavioral health technology companies, universities, and private practitioners. Most recently, she served as the Clinical Director of Behavioral Health with 98point6, where she aided in the planning and implementation of a behavioral telehealth service for large-scale implementation to employers, health insurers and direct to consumer offerings. Dr. Smucker Barnwell also maintains an independent clinical practice, and provides organizational change consultation to legal and technology professionals.

Dr. Smucker Barnwell received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Southern California. She also holds degrees from Harvard University and Wellesley College. She completed her internship at the West Los Angeles VA Healthcare System, and later completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Excellence in Substance Abuse Treatment and Education at Seattle VA.
