About this Event
Ottawa technology teacher Andrew Tomec, rising YouTube star and founder of Atomec Studios, is excited to announce the return of Tech Camp to the RA Centre this summer!
Your child’s imagination is the only limit in this full-day technology camp for kids 8-14 yrs old, which boasts a cutting-edge 21st Century learning model where small teams or individuals are given all the tools they need, and are set loose in our multimedia studio to work on their own creative projects in a supportive environment. Your child can choose to design and code their own video games, create a Lego stop-motion masterpiece, or film an epic space voyage in our green screen studio! Kids in need of skills or inspiration will be able join in on mini-lessons that build practical skills in coding and digital media creation, and self-starters will be encouraged to jump right in and use our studio’s resources to start bringing their ideas to life.
Atomec Studios is excited to be joined this summer by Mr. T’s wife, award-winning local artist and illustrator Lynne Anderson, who has recently jumped into the children’s education world with both feet, creating amazing illustrations and animations for Atomec Studios’ broadcasts. Lynne is helping our team put the ‘A’ into STEAM by spearheading a newly expanded digital art and animation program that will teach kids how to create their own digital characters, animate them and incorporate them into amazing creative projects.
Our zany new video tutorial series, “Scratch Hacks”, will form the bedrock of this summer’s learning experience, by introducing kids to the amazing game making, animation, art and music functions tools embedded in MIT’s Scratch, the world’s most popular technology tool for kids. These fun and engaging tutorials, built around Mr. T’s own classroom experiences, act as a starting point for insanely fun projects in coding, game design, music, digital art, animation, music and more.
Your child will get:
- A personal Chromebook to use for the week
- A fun laminated ID badge, and personal web portfolio page to share with family & friends
- A supportive learning environment where they are encouraged to team up but free to pursue their own personal passions if they want to
- Plenty of help available from Mr. T, a certified Ontario teacher, and his talented team of assistants, each with unique skills in game design, animation, digital arts and more
- Fun special events including film projects, competitions, and our popular social gaming breaks with Minecraft and Among us
- Weather permitting, optional daily swims in the RA Centre’s outdoor pool*
* Children will get have the option to splash around and cool off with a daily swim in the RA's two outdoor swimming pools. Children ages 8 and older MUST participate in a weekly swim assessment to determine if they are exempted from wearing a lifejacket and can enter the deep end. The swim test includes demonstrating the ability to swim 25 meters consistently in a confident manner while submerging their head underwater at least twice without goggles. As safety is always our top priority this requirement is paramount.
As always, all our programming is ASD/ADHD friendly. Introverts and lone wolves welcome!!

Lead instructor Andrew Tomec is a former journalist, veteran elementary school educator and lifelong computer geek who has taught coding and multimedia skills to thousands of Ottawa students and countless young viewers around the world. In addition to his Chromeworks Technology YouTube Scratch Tutorial channel, which has amassed over 300,000 views, and been named alongside the BBC as a leading online resource for cutting-edge e-learning during the pandemic, his groundbreaking work has been featured in Professionally Speaking, the official magazine of the Ontario College of Teachers. In January 2023, Mr. T rebranded as Atomec Studios and launched “Scratch Hacks”, a new YouTube video series of byte-sized Scratch tutorials designed to help educators easily introduce coding and animation to their students through Digital Storytelling. Gaining popularity with coders and artists quickly, these zany new tutorials put the “A” in STEAM, and have already been viewed over 55K times. Our dream is to one day open a non-profit, permanent multimedia studio where kids and youth can come and start their journey to becoming game designers, animators, filmmakers and more!
